A New Voice on Religion and Social Issues

“Only false prophets claim to have all the answers”
Jorge Mario Bergolio, (Pope Francis I of the Roma Catholic Church)

Many people have probably already heard or read of Pope Francis’ interview in which he is quoted on matters such as abortion and the rights of homosexual persons. There certainly seems to be a shift in attitude if not policy in the Catholic church since March of 2013.

Bergolio, (Francis I), also said, “The great leaders of the people, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord”. He went on to speak to the interviewer about mistakes he had made in Argentina as bishop.

He said that most bad decisions he had made were made because of an authoritarian and quick manner of making those decisions. s the largest single Christian demonization, the Roman Catholic Church influences over a billion people in the world. And, what the leader of that religious group says influences other people as well, especially on social issues.

As Pope, (or as he prefers to be called, “the Bishop of Rome”), Francis has been quiet regarding hot-button social issues such as abortion and homosexual rights, preferring to support the spirituality of all people. Unfortunately, churches have wounded homosexual persons socially, which Francis admitted. With this new voice in the interface between religion and social issues, we might work toward a more compassionate relationship between the religions and the public sector. Granted, nothing substantive has been changed, but attitudinally there may be an opening for the faithful to work toward the reconciliation of all people.

Realistically, I may be whistling past a graveyard, but as people of faith, we live in hope.

Peace and blessings, especially today to those who will be celebrating Sukkot, the feats of booths, beginning at sundown tonight.
